With its latest release, SPACES isn’t just the newest queer app on the market — and also the only app to serve the entirety of the LGBTQ+ community — but it’s now the smartest social platform for queer people, too. The app’s Version 1.13 sees the release of Smart Notifications, a better-than-ever way to ensure SPACES users stay updated on the group chats and specific topics that matter to them most.

Harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to improve user experience, SPACES Smart Notifications alert users via push notification when a new conversation is sparked in one of their Spaces — while also previewing the topic of that conversation, determined by machine-learned text completion and delivered in natural language.

All notifications on SPACES are fully customizable, able to be adjusted according to a user’s preference for each Space they’re in, and these Smart Notifications are an exciting new way for users to truly customize their in-app experience. With fewer — but smarter — notifications, SPACES users can more easily stay abreast of various conversations without feeling inundated by the onslaught of notifications that accompany so many other social platforms.

“The typical group-chat notification model alerts users to every message, but that can make conversations feel very noisy, especially if it’s a conversation you aren’t participating in. That drives users to disable notifications, which then leads to users missing out on content they would otherwise want to interact with,” says Matthew Hirst, Head of Engineering for SPACES. “The goal with smart notifications is to alert users to new conversations or content they may want to interact with, without all the noise.”

“And when it comes to what we can do with this new text-based-AI, we’re just scratching the surface,” he says. “We have a bunch of SPACES improvements planned using this new technology, from keeping users safe by detecting harmful messages to helping users find other Spaces and content they’re likely to want to interact with.”

SPACES is available as a free download in the App Store now.
